The Refuge of the Lord

Psalm 9:9 (NIV) - "The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble."

Have you ever had a day like I had today?  One of those days that seem to go wrong from the get-go? On days like this, it is always one thing, followed by another, followed by another. At the end of it, you just feel like collapsing into bed with a pillow over your head not wanting to be disturbed until tomorrow.

Well, my day today was just like that. I will not bore you with all the details, but suffice to say my attitude was horrible before noon. I was tired and grumpy but managing to get my work done. Then I got a text about a truly ridiculous family squabble that turned my attitude from grumpy to angry. So naturally I became totally distracted and started text messaging the person who sent me the message repeatedly about the matter. You can see how this quickly went into a tailspin. 30 minutes later I am literally seething about this issue, my work just sitting there undone in front of me. I knew I had to get this work done, but I was so distracted and angry that I could not focus.

Then, something came to me. I thought that maybe if I put my headphones on and listened to my worship music, the focus would return. And it did. It also inspired me to write this blog. Once I began to listen to music that glorified and lifted up the name of Jesus, my crap of the day went to the background and Jesus came to the foreground. See, only He is our refuge in times of trouble. Today chaos ruled my world, but Jesus glorified was the Rock that I looked to to be my refuge, my safe place.

Today, we tend to look to a lot of different places for peace and strength. All of them will ultimately fail except for one. People will fail us, work will fail us, money will fail us, even we will fail ourselves. But there is One Man, one God who never fails in times of trouble, and His name is Jesus. I challenge you today to think of the last time He was your refuge in times of trouble and thank Him for His faithfulness!
